Amherst Today

Amherst College is one of the premier liberal arts colleges in the nation, enrolling 1,800 talented, energetic and diverse young men and women. Our open curriculum is one of the boldest, most productive experiments in higher education.


Our Students

Our students—1,800 of the most interesting, intellectually adventurous, independent-minded people you’d want to meet—publish papers in major journals; present at conferences worldwide; and undertake research, internship, study and community engagement projects around the world.


Our Campus

Located adjacent to Amherst, a town of 35,000 people in the western part of the state, Amherst College has a scenic 1,000-acre campus and includes a 500-acre wildlife sanctuary.


Our Town

The town of Amherst combines breathtaking natural scenery with a rich cultural life. It is home to 35,000 politically engaged, culturally aware people. More than 40 percent of the local population has a graduate degree, and more than 30,000 college students live in Amherst during the academic year.


Amherst's Future

A new strategic plan will shape the College’s future, and major new building projects will transform the campus. The strategic plan calls for reinventing the liberal arts, hiring new faculty, recruiting a diverse student body, becoming a model of sustainability, creating residential “neighborhoods” and more.


Our Strategy

The seven priorities outlined in our strategic plan reaffirm our commitment to the liberal arts in an era of dramatic change, emphasizing connections between academic programs and residential offerings and preparing our graduates to enter the world.


The Future of Our Campus

By 2018 the eastern portion of the College campus will be transformed by the addition of a 230,000-square-foot science center, four new residence halls and an expansive greenway for recreation and relaxation running the full length of that landscape.

Recognition



Amherst College staff represent one of our institution's richest resources. Our Employee Recognition Program was developed to recognize and reward them for their contributions to the College in carrying out our mission. Our excellence is due in large part to their outstanding service. Please join us in thanking all of them for their dedication and service to Amherst College.


25 Year Club

Each spring the College hosts an employee recognition dinner to honor our employees who have worked for the College for twenty-five or more years. Employees are invited to attend the dinner which includes employees who are or have retired from the College in the previous year.


Service Awards

The Service Award Program, administered by the Office of Human Resources, recognizes staff who have attained certain service year levels.

There is no doubt that employees are the most valued asset of any organization and the ones responsible for its continued success. At Amherst College we value the dedication and loyalty of our employees, and celebrate their contributions and achievements.

As a symbol of our appreciation for your service to the College, we have implemented a Service Recognition Program. Recognition gifts are awarded to employees beginning at five years of cumulative regular service and every five-year milestone through 35 years and beyond. This program is administered by the Office of Human Resources

We are happy to announce the introduction of a new Service Recognition Program. The new program, in collaboration with Terryberry, provides employees the opportunity to select a gift from a wide variety of options. At the milestone anniversary employees will receive a Service Recognition packet, containing a catalog and detailed instructions to order the gift. Once ordered, the gifts are delivered to the Office of Human Resources for distribution through the employee's immediate supervisor or department head.
