Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the supervisor, provide oral medical interpretation for clinical and non-clinical encounters in verbal and written form in compliance with the IMIA Standards of Practice, Code of Ethics and BMC policies to ensure patient safety and access to quality care.

The Interpreter II interprets in at least two or more target languages and/or dialects. Translates from English into target languages and back, to allow communication between LES (Limited English Speaking) patients and hospital staff. Assists patients filling out forms, interpreting medical instructions, medication schedules and instructions. Provides administrative written translations such as letters to patients, documents, and patient materials. Tracks and documents encounters for reporting purposes.

Schedule: Part Time, Per-Diem Rotating Days, Nights, Evenings, and Weekends

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Interpret or translate from English into target languages and back, to allow communication between LES (Limited English Speaking) patients and hospital staff
  • Assists all patients in all aspects of registration, discharge, filling questionnaires and the like
  • Provides service to neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients
  • Interprets in at least two, BMC approved, target languages and/or dialects.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

  • Minimum of two years of college , OR
  • A certificate of completion of a Medical Interpreting Program and one year of medical interpreting experience, OR
  • High school graduate and two to three years of free lance medical, legal interpreting experience.

KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:

  • Requires demonstrated proficiency in English and the target languages to be worked in. (Determined by an entry test provided by Interpreter Services).
  • Must be familiar with and able to perform in all modes of interpretation and have knowledge and understanding of the Medical Interpreter Code of Ethics.
