Brown and Caldwell is looking for a junior level engineer to join the waste market sector team within our Private Sector Business Unit, and will report to our Andover, Massachusetts office location to support our clients in the Northeast and throughout the U.S. The successful candidate will work on a broad spectrum of projects ranging from studies, environmental investigations and design for solid waste management and recycling facilities and waste disposal facilities. This is an exciting full-time opportunity to work in a growth-oriented professional consulting firm with multiple offices throughout the U.S. Candidate will work with and be mentored by strong, nationally recognized, senior technical staff on a variety of projects. Our ideal candidate will have strong verbal/written communication skills and be a highly organized problem solver. The ideal candidate must be capable of working in a diverse team environment and handling multiple tasks with competing priorities. Some travel is required.

Detailed Description:

In this role you will assist with investigation, compliance, design and permitting work while providing field task-level and project level support and delivery within our environmental practice. Office work may include preparing work plans, reports, permit applications, figures, maps, design drawings, engineering calculations, technical specifications, and summarizing/interpreting various field and analytical data.

Field work may include on-site observation and documentation of construction and environmental investigation activities, compliance audits at solid waste facilities, walking reconnaissance of sites and environmental sampling.

Additional responsibilities to include:

  • Work closely with Project Managers to execute work involving civil and environmental principles.
  • Coordinate field efforts; adhere to and assist with the development of work plans and health and safety plans.
  • Under the supervision of senior staff, develop and prepare technical specifications, detailed design drawings, work plans, reports, perform construction submittal reviews, engineering calculations, prepare models and other technical deliverables for solid waste and environmental related projects.
  • Evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria to prepare, modify, revise work plans, reports, and designs.
  • Work closely with project team in planning and/or designing alternatives and design and engineering studies.
  • Communicate effectively and coordinate with project teams including other disciplines (drafters, designers, and other engineers).
  • Assist with project management activities.
  • Assist with business development pursuits as requested.
  • Position may require travel and off-site field visits.

Desired Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Civil, Environmental, or related) required.
  • Candidate should either have an EIT or be willing/able to obtain an EIT in the near term
  • Minimum 2 years of professional experience preferred.
  • Good technical skills with the ability to articulate ideas and concepts both visually and contextually are essential.
  • Strong verbal/written communication skills and ability to work well independently and in team environments.
  • Must be a self-starter, highly organized, results-oriented, reliable, and able to work well with a wide variety of coworkers and subcontractors.
  • Must be proficient in using standard computer programs (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook); experience with MS Project, MS Access, CADD and/or ArcGIS a plus.
  • Candidate must be willing and able to travel for daily and short-term field assignments.
  • Possess 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification with current 8-hour refresher or have the ability to take and pass the training/physical
  • Valid driver's license and good driving record
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining a strong focus on health and safety, quality, and schedule.
  • Ability to work for short periods of time in hot and cold weather (occasionally extreme conditions).
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment at sites including hard hats, steel toed boots (or other approved toe protection), safety glasses, safety vests, respirators, etc.
  • Ability to stand for several hours observing and documenting field conditions or critical construction operations.
  • Ability to walk slowly around sites of varying size that may have areas of uneven, muddy, and/or rocky ground to perform inspections and take photographs.
  • Ability to work for short periods of time in extreme temperatures including heat and cold.
  • Ability to lift objects less than 30 pounds
  • Ability to remain alert and vigilant while working around construction equipment and be able to walk swiftly for a short distance to clear an area where a potential hazard is identified.
  • Ability to climb stairs (2-3 flights) or ladders (up to 24 foot typically) to access structures for visual inspection.

Salary Range:Theanticipatedstarting payrange for this position is based on the employee's primary work location and maybemore or lessdependingupon skills, experience,and education. These ranges may be modified in the future.

Location A: $63,000- $86,000
Location B: $69,000- $94,000
Location C: $76,000- $103,000
