GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
The Anesthesia Nurse Practitioner (NP) is responsible for the assessment and management of ambulatory surgical patients throughout the care continuum: pre-operative evaluations, diagnostic and therapeutic interpretation, development of appropriate plans of care, post-operative recovery, and post-discharge follow-up. The NP works under the supervision of an attending anesthesiologist or surgeon and reports directly to the Mass General Waltham Medical Director.
The NP will perform in accordance with all state and federal regulations and institutional policies including but not limited to the MGH NP Scope of Practice, Prescriptive Guidelines, approved clinical privileges, and MGH NP policy.


PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Principle Clinical Duties and Responsibilities:
* Reviews operative schedule well in advance to identify patients in need of pre-anesthesia phone screen, to complete this Pre-Anesthesia Testing review, to flag/triage those who may require special circumstance/care, and to identify patients who do not meet inclusion criteria to be treated at Mass General Waltham ASC.
* Provides complete pre-procedure/pre-sedation anesthetic assessment of patients who will be undergoing all ambulatory surgeries and procedures for a variety of indications and therapies.
* Communicates with the patient's other physicians and their office/scheduling staff if additional data is required to complete the pre-procedure assessment
* Communicates with the Mass General Waltham anesthesiology staff, particularly the attending anesthesiologists and Medical Director, with regards to pre-procedure testing, triage and care-coordination
* Ensures proper consents, History/Physical, and other documentation in place preoperatively
* Performs complete histories and physical examinations
* Provides direct care, counseling, and teaching to a surgical patient population in the ambulatory, operative, and/or procedural setting
* Orders, interprets, and evaluates appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests
* Develops appropriate plans of care and follow-up based on the outcomes of diagnostic, laboratory, and physical examination findings
* Orders medications and writes prescriptions according to organizational and regulatory policies and procedures
* Discusses patient data with other physicians and professionals as appropriate in a multi-disciplinary setting
* Consistently provides high quality and timely documentation including pre-anesthetic evaluation notes, procedure notes, operative notes, post-operative check notes, discharge notes and transfer notes
* Assists physicians with procedures, including peripheral nerve blocks
* Performs bedside procedures, such as IV placement, as is appropriate to the patient population and clinical setting
* In some settings, the NP may first-assist in the operating room or procedural areas
* Practices cost-effective medicine in an efficient manner, maximizing available resources
* Assists in transport of patients when clinically indicated (for example to/from the OR, PACU, garage, pharmacy, etc.)
* Demonstrates expert clinical judgment and functions in an independent role
* Additional duties and responsibilities as required by the department/division
Non-Clinical Duties and Responsibilities:
* Demonstrates professional collaborative and consultative relationships with other providers
* Follows all designated prescriptive practices and monitoring requirements with the designated supervising physician and administrative report
* Participates in departmental and organizational committees and programs as appropriate and attends all required meetings, in-services, and professional trainings
* Maintains superior interpersonal and communication skills as a member of the healthcare team in order to collaborate effectively with patients, families, staff, and community health workers
* Remains actively involved in continuing education with a commitment to self and departmental growth
* Adheres to all established quality and safety policies, procedures, and precautions; identifies potential or actual unsafe situations in the environment and takes measures to remedy the situation
* Participates in and may initiate quality assessment and quality improvement projects as they pertain to anesthesia.
* Demonstrates understanding of procedures, policies, and documentation required to ensure compliance with hospital standards of care
* Participates in review of ASC efficiency and utilization Additional duties and responsibilities as required by the department/division

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
The Nurse Practitioner I does not have any supervisory responsibility.

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY:
The Nurse Practitioner does not have any fiscal responsibility.


SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
* Must have the ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic, busy clinical setting
* Must have the ability to be self-directive and to demonstrate initiative in addressing the responsibilities of the position
* Must have the ability to utilize appropriate problem-solving and conflict resolution skills
* Must be energetic and quality-driven and have a proven ability to be a productive member of a team dedicated to providing optimal patient care
* Must be proficient with MGH computer systems (EMR, Epic preferred) as needed to perform daily tasks independently
* Must maintain the highest degree of professional judgment under the supervision and guidance of a licensed physician

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work settings may include preoperative/preadmission testing clinic (phone screening), examination rooms, preoperative holding area, operating rooms, post-anesthesia care units (PACU) and/or procedural areas.

Qualifications

* The appropriate candidate will have successfully graduated from a Masters-level Nurse Practitioner program and licensed as a Nurse Practitioner
* Must hold a current valid license or be eligible for licensure as a NP in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
* Must have or be eligible for and maintain a current DEA registration and Massachusetts Controlled Substance Registration
