The Opportunity

Performs a variety of duties related to the accounting for the various employee benefit programs across the Mass General Brigham (MGB) health enterprise. Works closely with all levels within the MGB network and serves as a key contact for Human Resources, General Accounting and entity budget offices for matters related to benefits accounting.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Become familiar with our various benefit programs and expenses, including but not limited to health, retirement, and FICA.
  • Oversee benefits-related activity across the enterprise to ensure GAAP accounting standards and MGB accounting policies are strictly followed.
  • Prepare monthly journal entries, ensuring all activity is recorded, adjustments are calculated, and corrections are made.
  • Perform detailed analyses of various general ledger accounts to ensure accuracy, completeness, and reasonableness.
  • Prepare budget vs. actual analyses and communicate variance drivers and projected impact.
  • Perform balance sheet GL account reconciliations using reconciliation software on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis.
  • Maintain in an organized manner all on-line supporting back-up for review by external auditors.
  • Serve as a point of contact for outside actuarial consultants and external auditors as needed to ensure timely and accurate financial reporting.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement.
  • Perform ad-hoc analysis to support management inquiries, and other projects and reports as requested.
Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field required. CPA or MBA preferred.
  • At least 4-6 years of accounting experience required. Public accounting/auditing experience preferred.
  • Healthcare experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of Workday GL/ERP systems preferred.

Skills, Abilities and Competencies

  • Ability to work effectively in teams and also autonomously in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to handle multiple tasks in a timely, accurate, detail- oriented manner.
  • Strong oral & written communications skills, with experience in translating and communicating key analyses and assumptions to Senior Management for decision-making.
  • Must be customer-service focused and a motivated self-starter.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to research issues and process complex transactions and procedures.
  • Innovative thinker who can evaluate, propose, and implement process improvements.
  • Ability to positively internalize constructive feedback for professional development.
  • Strong Microsoft Office and Outlook skills with intermediate level (or better) EXCEL skills.
  • Familiarity with accounting systems, PeopleSoft and/or Work Day G/L is a strong plus.
