Description

This position supports all Environmental Affairs Department (EA) activities aimed at managing risks of workplace injury and illness and maintaining compliance with pertinent EH&S codes, standards and guidelines. These EH&S activities include identifying hazards and safety issues; developing, implementing and monitoring effective hazard controls and solutions; and assuring continued effectiveness through safety systems development and continual process oversight and improvement. The position performs general safety functions that include conducting safety surveys, investigating incidents, exposure monitoring, managing hazardous materials, assisting in responding to various emergencies, training, and collecting and managing data and documentation. This position will be based at BWH Main Campus but may be asked to respond to any BWH location. This position's day-to-day duties will be coordinated and supervised by the Environmental Affairs department's EH&S Coordinator(s) under the EH&S Manager.

* Perform safety audits of clinical, laboratory, construction and support areas as assigned. Record audit results. Interface with department safety representatives to mitigate findings. Assist in inspectional activities performed by the fire department and other outside agencies.

* Tracking and reporting metrics under supervision of department coordinators & management and internal oversight meetings/committees

* Support all aspects of managing hazardous chemical materials and wastes. Develop and/or maintain competency in all facets of chemical waste management and provide basic oversight and technical support for hazardous chemical waste operations under the supervision of, and assignment by, the EH&S Safety Manager.

* Perform basic occupational hygiene technical support. Maintain competence in using selected monitoring devices and systems. Perform exposure monitoring for personnel working with hazardous materials and potentially exposed to other non-chemical environmental factors.

* Assist with indoor air quality investigations. Perform interviews. Conduct air monitoring activities and other technical tasks as necessary. Interface with facilities personnel and contractors as needed for effective follow up. Record and document all pertinent findings.

* Survey/Investigate construction projects for hazards

* Support emergency preparedness and response capabilities of the department. Respond to chemical spills, water leak/mold moisture incursions and support the EH&S department's role on the hospital's chemical HAZMAT Team.

* Respond to workplace incidents. Investigate, determine and document incident causes and assist with follow up and mitigation of causative issues.

* Maintain technical competencies based on job function demands. Also maintain knowledge of pertinent policies, procedures, codes and standards and stay current with requirements.

* Provide written and verbal reports as assigned.

* Represent the department on various standing and ad-hoc committees as assigned.

* Assist in managing the personal protective equipment program. Provide information and training to users. Assist in fit-testing respirator wearers.

* Provide general safety training to employees covering fundamental topics such as fire prevention and response, chemical safety, and personal protective equipment; support department-specific training efforts through "train-the-trainer" activities.

* Participate in project work as assigned.

* Flexibility and teamwork: this department has a broad set of responsibilities requiring all technical staff to multitask and support others

* Computer competency with general office software and apps

* Physically able to perform tasks such as walking, standing, climbing, lifting, carrying

* Must be able to wear a respirator and other personal protective equipment

Qualifications

* Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent in environmental health & safety field with 0-3 years of experience or Associates degree in a related field with at least 2 years of relevant experience.

* Basic competency in general chemistry

* Strong interpersonal skills and verbal and written communication skills.

* Capable of performing tasks while wearing a respirator and/or other personal protective equipment.

* OSHA HAZWOPER Certification preferred

* RCRA/DOT Certification preferred

* ASP Certification Preferred
