GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:

The primary purpose of this position is to create and support in-house software developed to support the radiation therapy treatment planning process from simulation to treatment delivery. In-house applications are intended to extend and supplement commercial software applications and create innovative ways to improve the efficiency and safety of clinical operations. Many of these applications are used daily in the clinic and are essential for completing various clinical processes. The candidate must be able to work independently and under the supervision of the director of technology and staff physicists to design, test and implement software tools within the configuration of these resources. Broad programming and database skills are essential and an understanding of operational issues in a radiation therapy department.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Designs, codes, tests and debugs software based on provided specifications.
  • Works collaboratively with other developers as needed.
  • Writes documentation both for software users and to support future development.
  • Provides support for applications as needed. Communicates with local IS teams to allow support to be provided by them 24x7.
  • Advises supervisors regarding project prioritization based on resources need to complete a project and the level of demand.
  • Establishes personal rapport with clinical staff to better understand clinical needs and develop effective solutions to clinical problems.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS:

* A bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, or related subject. Coursework in computer science taken outside a formal degree program combined with demonstrated competency in software development is an advantage.

* Ability to develop computer code using an object-oriented computer language (Java, C++, C#).

* Ability to design SQL databases and create programming interfaces to databases.

SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot problems independently and find solutions is paramount. Must be well organized, able to multi-task and work independently when required. The ability to document work and function as a team player is also essential.

Knowledge and experience of the following, listed roughly in order of importance:

Programming with Java for both desktop and web Application frameworks.

Familiarity with client-server applications, Database, SQL, Microsoft Access, Sybase

Experience with Radiotherapy Applications such as Aria\Eclipse

Familiarity with client-server applications

Programming with C, C++, C#

Unix (Linux, Samba) system administration

Windows 2000/XP system administration

Works within legal, regulatory, accreditation and ethical practice standards relevant to the position and as established by BWH/Partners; follows safe practices required for the position; complies with appropriate BWH and Partners policies and procedures; fulfills any training required by BWH and/or Partners, as appropriate; brings potential matters of non-compliance to the attention of the supervisor or other appropriate hospital staff.
