Job Description

McMillen is seeking a full-time, Entry-Level Fire Protection Engineer. Candidate must be formally educated in fire protection / life safety engineering, be or imminently prepared to be an Engineer In Training (EIT), or recently licensed in Fire Protection Engineering. The candidate will work at the direction of project engineers applying various design engineering techniques, modeling methods, and construction support to deliver successful fire and life safety analysis and design projects. The position can be based in our Boise, Idaho or Atlanta, Georgia offices. McMillen is also open to this position being filled remotely with the right candidate that has excellent communication and time management skills.

Preferable applicants will have passed the Fundamentals in Engineering examination for general engineering, with future intent on passing the NCEES professional licensure examination for Fire Protection Engineering.

Application of building codes and standards is critical to the position. Applicant should have received education in or introduction to International Building Code, International Fire Code, NFPA Codes and Standards, Unified Facilities Criteria, and FM Global Data Sheets.

Position will require an education in or possess working experience in fire suppression systems including, but not be limited to, automatic sprinkler systems, standpipe systems, hybrid fire suppression systems, wet and dry chemical extinguishing systems, CO2 extinguishing systems, and Clean Agent extinguishing systems.

Position will require an education in or possess working experience in fire alarm systems including but not be limited to, intelligent and conventional fire alarm systems, different types and application of fire detection, and means of notification and intelligibility.

Responsibilities: Under the direction and mentorship of a licensed engineer.

  • Provide life safety and code analysis, code-compliant asset protection, and fire life safety hazard mitigation solutions.
  • Collaborate on solutions from various senior design professionals to establish project specific design criteria.
  • Gather historical information including drawings, design reports, and codes.
  • Assist in the design of fire suppression systems based on the space and code requirements, and water supply evaluation.
  • Assist in the design of fire detection and notification, releasing control panels, off-premises signal reporting, and ancillary system electrical interfaces.
  • Perform smoke modeling Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) initial conditions development and scenarios analysis.
  • Prepare detailed design drawings mark-ups for CAD staff.
  • Using the various applicable Life Safety & Fire codes, best practices, and industry standards, provide calculations, equipment size and quantities, and equipment and construction specifications.
  • Perform a range of design development, analysis, or review tasks under senior supervision.
  • Generate design specifications of installation projects.
  • Develop, maintain, and produce technical documentation and system/subsystem specifications.
  • With senior engineering supervision, conduct site visits, investigations, and data collection.
  • Comply with engineering documentation standards and test procedures.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Fire Protection Engineering from a school or university with an accredited engineering program.
  • Having passed the Fundamentals in Engineering examination for general engineering, or imminently prepared to.
  • Registration as an Engineer In Training, or imminently prepared to.

Excelled in coursework in:

  • Life safety analysis
  • Fire suppression systems
  • Fire detection and notification systems
  • Fire dynamics
  • Smoke modeling (computational fluid dynamics) software
  • Performance based design

Computer skills:

  • Hydraulic analysis software (e.g., HASS, HydraCALC)
  • Smoke modeling software (e.g., Fire Dynamics Simulator, Smokeview, PyroSim)
  • Excel

Communication skills:

  • Must be able to communicate complex ideas clearly and in a manner readily understood by engineering associates.
  • Must be able to write clearly and succinctly.

Good communications and analytical skills; working knowledge of computer systems and integrated software application programs.

Position will require travel (approximately 10-20%)

Position may require the ability to pass and maintain a Security Clearance.

Due to the nature of the work, candidate must be US Citizen.

Compensation Package:

  • Pay Range: $70,000-$90,000 annual (depends upon skills, experience, education and geographical location)
