Pay Range

$206,490 - $318,216 Annually

$206,490 - $265,188 Annually for the SEL.4 level

$247,800 - $318,216 Annually for the SEL.5 level

Job Description

We have an opening for aDeputy Program Group Leader(DPGL) for the Laser Inertial Confinement Fusion Modeling (LM) group, composed of five teams within the Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) Science section of the Weapons Physics and Design (WPD) program. Within the LM group, the DPGL assists the Program Group Leader (PGL) in fulfillment of the duties and responsibilities described below. As part of the ICF leadership team you will participate in the development of simulations, design, and analysis, as well as experimental plans. This position is in the Strategic Deterrence (SD) Directorate.

This position will be filled at eitherlevel based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role, you will:

  • Participate in peer review modeling methodologies, simulation plans, target physics designs, and extrapolations.
  • Assist in providing guidance and mentorship to the modeling teams.
  • Maintain a constructive and collaborative working relationship with the other ICF and High Energy Density (HED) Science PGLs, the ICF and HED Science APDs, and with the Project Coordination Council members within the Weapons Simulation and Computation program.
  • In collaboration with the ICF Science leadership team, provide technical direction for the development and implementation of the ICF Science plan including staffing and budget allocations.
  • Comply with Lawrence Livermore National Security (LLNS) policy and procedures, contract requirements, and applicable laws and regulations.
  • Recognize, create, and implement plans to promote and foster a culture of inclusion, diversity, equity, and accountability.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional responsibilities at the SEL.5 Level:

  • Interface with the line organizations (principally DPD) on designer staffing.
  • Share in the management and communication of LM program objectives, accomplishments, and plans to the ICF workforce, WPD, and external stakeholders.

Qualifications
  • This position requires an active Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance or active Top-Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.
  • PhD in Engineering, Physics, or a related technical field or equivalent level of demonstrated knowledge.
  • Significant knowledge of inertial confinement fusion physics, design, and engineering.
  • Track record of teaming and partnering effectively to build, lead, and motivate cross-disciplinary and cross-laboratory teams to work toward programmatic and institutional goals.
  • Experience managing and leading a technical portfolio, supporting large-scale projects led by others, and a demonstrated ability to deliver results.
  • Advanced problem solving, analytical, technical, organizational, and management skills, necessary to independently advise, recommend, and approve appropriate actions and implement solutions.
  • Expert communication skills, both written and verbal, necessary to effectively explain and present to external stakeholders and to staff.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain authorization as a Derivative Classifier with knowledge of ICF.
  • Familiarity with laser-based (NIF and OMEGA) and pulsed-power (Z-facility) ICF facilities.
  • Familiarity with LLNL's Strategic Deterrence Directorate, and the LLNL weapons physics program.

Additionally, at the SEL.5 Level:

  • Expert communicator, with advanced verbal and written skills to positively represent the Program and Laboratory.
  • Expert problem-solving and decision-making skills necessary to independently address challenging problems.
  • Nationally recognized expert knowledge in above-mentioned fields.
  • Extensive experience and demonstrated ability to lead and develop positions on cutting-edge technologies.
  • Extensive experience in planning the integration and implementation of state-of-the-art technologies that have impact beyond the Laboratory.
